Gaming sound and music are moving day by day even closer to the Remote Control Studios / Hans Zimmer sound, aiming (obviously) at the paying and gaming youngsters. The industry does that by filling their music with heavy driving percussive rhythms, electric guitars on distortion (and generally lots of rock music elements) and of course when applicable – middle eastern instruments.
This one here is the closest (and best, i have to say) cousin to Hans Zimmer’s BLACKHAWK DOWN which influenced a whole horde of clones from various composers through the years; thing is that not one of them was ever able to reach the original’s quality and of course – originality. This one here however is pretty good – surprisingly enough if you consider that the composer (Ramin) has delivered pretty average to standard scores up to now (And believe me, i am being very generous with these characterizations). Some of his recent major work was mostly even unlistenable (like the mess that was the Iron Man score).
So, apart the usual guitar / drums driven pieces a la RC which do sound much better this time ’cause they’re Bear McCreary-influenced with their driving timpani, there’s also strong thematic and dramatic material, like “heroes abroad” “falling away” (a very nice elegiac song), “high ground” and “the summit” for instance. Overall this score CD would make a great album for young RC fans and generally lovers of the ‘modern’ film music sound but would also satisfy the rest with some excellent 4-5 entries in a 2010 film music compilation album for instance.
The obvious The thin red line-influenced pieces like “final extraction” and “heroes abroad” for instance, are surprisingly organic (lots of acoustic instruments, middle eastern and classic strings all in nice motifs) and at parts – even beautiful! There’s a main theme (Zimmer-esque of course) and 2nd ary motifs.
I am personally impressed and looking forward to the near future, i really hope this marks a departure from messy cheap scores to something more meaningful.
Cd is out 28 Sept 2010 in mp3 format (digital download) and can be found here.
